Remove incentives

Removing incentives is perhaps one of the best techniques through which you can get rid of squirrels. Squirrels spend a large percentage of their time looking for food and by removing all incentives from your yard; they will have to move elsewhere. For starters, ensure that you rake up and remove any nuts that fall from trees and tightly seal the lids of your trashcan. This will ensure that squirrels are not lured by the sight and smell of food lying around in your yard

Spicy foods

Squirrels do not like the scent of spicy food and will naturally give a wide berth to areas with such smells. Sprinkling spices like cayenne pepper or chili powder in areas most frequented by squirrels will help keep squirrels away

Garlic vinegar

The smell of garlic and vinegar gives squirrels great discomfort and as such, should be used as a home remedy. Chop up garlic with jalapeno pepper, mix it with vinegar and water and place it in a squirt bottle. Spray areas most frequented by the squirrels such as the garden and ensure you respray the area after every rainfall

Peppermint

Peppermint is a natural squirrel repellant and squirrels will avoid areas with the strong scent of live peppermint plants. Alternatively, you can soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and drop them in areas most frequented by squirrels

Mothballs

Squirrels do not like mothballs and securing mothballs in a mesh or hanging them in stockings next to areas frequented by squirrels will effectively keep them away

Predators/pets

The presence of predators is another home remedy for squirrels. Dogs and cats love playing with anything that moves and while in most instances they may not be able to catch squirrels, the discomfort of having to be always on the lookout will eventually drive them away
